    Arrival in Sri Lanka

A Simply Sri Lanka representative will be at the Bandaranaike (Colombo) International Airport awaiting your arrival. From the airport you’ll be whisked off to the hotel by your very own personal chauffeur.

    Transfer to Colombo

Enjoy a city tour of Colombo; the former administrative capital of Sri Lanka, and the country’s largest city. It is an eclectic mix of the bygone colonial era as well as having a stark modern contrast. The main reason Colombo is what it is today is thanks to the large harbour and situation facing India and being in a stop-off point for East-West trade. The British Empire in 1815 made Colombo the capital of Sri Lanka and as such it’s home to the main entertainment, restaurants and corporate offices that you’d expect from a large city. The tour of Colombo lets you delve into the past and present of the city, looking at the commercial sites, religious areas and historical monuments. You will get to see Pettah and the bustling Fort as well as the Galle face Green, Cinnamon Gardens and the sublime Viharamahadevi Park.

Built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, the Sigiriya Rock fortress is a stunning attraction in Sri Lanka to see. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site that rises starkly from the rock face. It is a spectacular citadel that is surrounded by a dramatic setting of more than 70 hectares. The fortified town that it protects are beautifully cared for and as this is the country’s most significant and popular attraction it is a must-see place during your trip. The extensive gardens, rampart and moat simply add the sheer drama that beholds this small town, and there are the frescoes of the Heavenly Maidens in the spiral stairway of the sheltered rock face to see also. Compared to other UNESCO sites this one lets you get up close and personal with the beauty it exudes making your holiday to Sri Lanka unforgettable.

Slowly pass through the paddy fields on the back of a village bullock cart, in traditional style, to see how life and farming happens in Sri Lanka, and indeed a lot of Asia still. You’ll start at the Hiriwadunna Lake near the village temple and walk on foot for 10 minutes until the boat journey will start. Then, you’ll stop at the Chena or traditional farm, whereby you will be invited to enjoy coconut water from the farm’s coconut plantation. The boat trip will then last around 40 minutes where you will pass through another village but stopping at a traditional house where the local village families will greet you.

From there you’ll be invited to lunch for a typical Sri Lankan curry which comes served on lotus leaves, and have tropical fruit for dessert. It’s a superb way of getting up close and personal with the Sri Lankan way of life.
